Political Lockdown In Nigeria Over Deadly Covid-19

Since the outbreak of corona-virus, numerous measures have been taken in 2/3 countries of the world to avoid sporadic spread and limit effect on their economy, social and Political life. Nigeria with over 200 million human populations and one of the most populated countries in Africa recorded her first outbreak of the virus on 28th February 2020, it was confirmed by the Federal Ministry of Health that an Italian on a return flight to Lagos carried the disease.

This marked the onset of the spread of the virus in Nigeria, even though
the first reported case had been claimed by many as a decoy for a divert of funds by the government. In other to affirm the claim, the former President of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo also called out the government on the reported case of Corona-virus in a video released online.

Between February and now, the cases of Coronavirus have spontaneously increased and a major concern was its effect on the Political hegemony of the called First-class citizens, among was Malam Abba Kyari, the Chief of Staff to President Muhammadu Buhari, who returned to Nigeria from Germany on March 14, and had participated in several functions and meetings.

He was tested positive to Corona-virus on the 24th of March, 2020.
This has caused a stir up at the government house in Abuja (Aso rock), as a result of the previous meetings the Chief of Staff had with the President Buhari, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, and other people at the Political echelon of the country, including governors and ministers.

Furthermore, it was uncovered that the Chief of Staff on his arrival on March 14, attended the wedding of the son of the Inspector General of Police, Muhammad Adamu, while, Umar Ganduje and Yahaya Bello, the Governor’s of Kano and Kogi had close contacts with Kyari.

Hence, all these dignitaries that had come in contact with the Chief of Staff have been advised to engage in self-quarantine, including the President and Vice President.  In the early hours of 25th of March, the President and Vice President was reported to have tested Negative to Corona-virus, however, the Governor of Bauchi State, Bala Mohammed has tested positive to the virus. NCDC has also reported that 3 top aides to the President have tested positive to Corona-virus.

Other top politicians that had contact with the Chief of Staff have gone into self-isolation, Governors of Osun, Ogun, Ondo and others have gone for the virus test. Pertinent to note is that business as usual, has ceased in the Presidential Villa, the National Assembly have suspended all meetings while the government have proposed total lock-down of the country.

Another controversy is the speculation surrounding the health of the President, even though the released report showed negative to corona-virus, however, recent developments in the President Villa has been the suspension of all activities till further notice which is due to the uncertainty of the President’s released health status.
