Global Crisis Hit Nigeria Political Leadership

Over 180 million Nigerians have been thrown into speculations and uncertainty over the absence of the First citizen of the country, President Muhammadu Buhari. Following the coronavirus test result released by NCDC (Nigeria Centre for Disease Control) with the regard to the contact between Mr President and the Chief of Staff who have tested positive, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control formally released the result of Mr President as negative to the coronavirus test.

However, since the period of this declaration on the 26th of March 2020 as confirmed on the President’s social media account, there has not been any official statement or speech addressing the released test result or address his countrymen in this period of global crisis. Critics have alleged that President Muhammadu Buhari has been tested positive for the coronavirus and the Federal Government is playing politics with Nigerians. Further surveys have shown that President Muhammadu Buhari and his Chief of Staff, Abba Kyari might have been flown outside the country for medical treatment.

If news or rumors of the President Muhammadu Buhari being tested positive to coronavirus is apt, then, He will be joining other prominent politicians in the world like Boris Johnson, the Prime Minister of the UK, who have also recently tested positive to the coronavirus. Many have also lamented the need for the presence of the President in the country to address germane issues surrounding the outbreak of this deadly disease in the country.

However, contrary to the absence of President Muhammadu Buhari in the country, the state with the highest record of victims with this deadly disease, Lagos state, have been able to devise a herculean political measure in tackling the issue of this deadly disease. Lagos has recorded the highest case of coronavirus in Nigeria, with as many as over 60 confirmed cases. The Lagos state leadership, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, have adopted drastic measures in ensuring the coronavirus is contained and not allowed to spread to other people.

Amidst this leadership action was the order to lock down the state, he also banned the gathering of over 25-50 people. The Lagos state government have further put the interest of the people into consideration, fully aware that the lockdown will affect daily activities and some individual that cater for the daily living of their family through their business would be solely affect, hence, the Governor have given the directive that food packs should be distributed in tandem with his priority of giving the people of Lagos state comfort. The food pack distribution has targeted 200,000 households to be delivered within 14 days. He has further reiterated that relief would further continue to be provided to several other households.

The absence of President Muhammadu Buhari for some days have led to numerous debate while some prominent advocates in Nigeria have started comparing the Governor of Lagos state over his political attribute and rapid action towards the health care and comfort of the people of his state to the absence and failure of the President Muhammadu Buhari to address the Nations and even failed to release a consolation speech to the citizen.
